From Field to Desk
It's been a long time since we've witnessed such universal enthusiasm throughout our breed and the cattle business as a whole. From the excellent turnout at the CHA annual meeting in British Columbia in June to the opening of the U.S. border to Canadian feeder and slaughter cattle in August, it has been a rewarding summer with outstanding participation in 4H and Junior Hereford activities held throughout the country. The feeder cattle markets seem to reach new levels almost every day. In reality, Canadian grass yearlings, and at this early stage it would appear that calves also, are selling at par with cattle of equal quality in the United States.
The fall production sales are attracting renewed interest and I am sure will set a new evaluation for registered Herefords leading into the 2006 spring bull sales.
Combine all these factors with an exceptional growing season in most areas that will result in late fall pasture and an abundance of cheap winter feed, and you have all the ingredients required for the economic resurgence so long awaited in the beef industry.
All of the young people from throughout Canada who participated at this year's Bonanza are especially to be congratulated. The Ontario Junior Hereford Association and all of the many volunteers and advisors involved have again earned our utmost respect and admiration for the success resulting from their efforts.
As more and more Canadian cattlemen look to the Hereford breed to solve their crossbreeding, maternal and temperament dilemmas, we must all be equipped with the genetics that will guarantee them the uniformity and reliability they seek. It is a time to solve problems for cattlemen that have faced great challenges the past two years. Those who show they sincerely care in providing such assistance will see their efforts rewarded ten fold.
BONANZA 2005
Many of us who stop and look back on our lives, realize that childhood and youth were two very important intervals of our life. For most of us it was a time when we had little responsibility as Mom and Dad took care of our major concerns such as something to eat and a place to sleep. Moving into our teen years meant our responsibilities increased as well as our energy, and even some of the cares of the world became ours. We formed more friendships along the way and started to get a grasp of some of the more important values in life that remain with us to this very day.
Having had the privilege of attending 'Bonanza 2005' held at Lindsay, Ontario, July 26 - 30, I am even more convinced then ever before that we as a breed association both Canadian and Provincial, have a great privilege and responsibility of making a lasting contribution to the individual lives and families of our Junior Association. We need to realize afresh that as a parent association, the promotion of the Hereford breed is secondary, and that the main focus is that we offer our youth an opportunity to enhance relationships with parents, and each other as well as develop leadership skills. In time, because of these opportunities, the association will reap the benefits of a future built on the experiences of the youth of this day. I feel that Bonanza 2005 will continue to achieve just that. Not only did Herefords Jive in 2005, but so did our youth.
Juniors were represented from across Canada at this year's events. A very special thank you to all the Bonanza sponsors, and volunteers as well as the Canadian Junior Association. To the Ontario Junior Association, special recognition and thanks go to Katelyn McEachren, Chantel Anderson, Laine Corp, Sarah Gerritson, Cathy Lasby, all adult volunteers and our adult advisors Jill and Bill Corp for your sincere concern and continued efforts.
Start planning now for Bonanza 2006 to be held at Brandon , Manitoba in conjunction with the C.H.A. Annual Meeting.

"Supreme" BCD 140L Dom Lad 326N - Tops All Breeds at Calgary Stampede
Brad and Kathy Dallas of Dallas Farms, breeders of this year's Grand Champion Hereford Bull at the Calgary Stampede, together with Adams Ranch and Hirsche Herefords, who purchased this outstanding individual at the 2005 Calgary Bull Sale, were elated when "Supreme" went on to excel over nine other breeds and be named the first Hereford bull to capture the Meyers Norris Penny Beef Cattle Supreme Championship at this great event.
"A Hereford has never won this," said Grant Hirsche. "It's pretty neat. It's exciting. We have been in it so many times where we were close. You go back to the barn and there is no recognition for second place. It's great to get in there."
BCD 326N was born Feb. 5, 2003 and sired by BP Robin Hood 140L and out of BP 146D Lady 30L.

S.W. Zone Picnic
It was a very pleasant evening with a relaxed gathering of Hereford breeders and friends at the home of Rick and Tracey Haynes and daughter April (pictured) for the South Western Zone picnic. Add to this Hereford cattle and the most awesome surroundings and you have the ingredients for a great time.We look forward to the Honour Roll presentation for Evelyn & Graham Gillies, of Milton , to take place at our OHA Annual Meeting on March 3rd & 4th , 2006.
The many fall sales in Ontario are just about to start. This is always an exciting time in the province, thanks to all those who host these events, as well as all guest consignors.
These sales are advantageous to our breed, so let's give them our full support.
There are two new sales planned for later in the year in Ontario . One being the commercial calf sale on November 14th at the Brussels Stock Yards, and the other being the Ontario Hereford Association Fall Show and Sale on Saturday, December 3rd at the Orangeville Fair Grounds. Details for both can be found in the Summer OHA News, or give us a call at the office.
