From Field to Desk

It has been a good year for Canadian Hereford cattle. Demand was and continues to remain high with excellent and active crowds attending sales and shows throughout the nation. Last spring's successful production sales and consignment bull sales were followed by several highly competitive summer shows and area field days. Junior activities were well attended in all provinces and the National Junior Bonanza, hosted by Manitoba in early August, was one of the best ever!

As you read this, we are again well into the fall sale season. The early sales in Ontario and at the Saskatchewan Sweepsteaks and later, drew great crowds with many new names appearing on the buyer's lists. Lots of calls continue to come in pertaining to those sales still to be held and I am certain that their hosts will also experience widespread success. Entries are excellent for the major fall shows at the "Royal", Canadian Western Agribition and the Canadian National Show at Farmfair in Edmonton.

I am aware that commercial markets that started out very strong in September and early October have tapered somewhat as a result of the shortage of feed in central and south eastern portions of the U.S. Also, as a result of the U.S. drought, their weaned calves and grass yearlings are all on feed at the same time giving them the highest "On Feed" numbers in their history. However, this is just another "bump in the road" and very temporary. Once these cattle have passed through the system and normal weather returns to the affected states, there will be a huge demand for beef and breeding stock and few places where they will be available.

Even without an open border for breeding cattle, anything affecting the U.S. market still exercises major influence here and so it will be when they initiate the repopulation of their National herd.

On all fronts, the New Year holds great promise for the North American beef industry and for Canadian Hereford cattle.

All of the staff of The Canadian Hereford Digest takes this opportunity to wish all of you a VERY MERRY CHIRISTMAS and all good fortune and good health in 2007!

BC HEREFORD BULL-ETIN

We have had some Hereford Influence calf sales in British Coumbia recently and according to all reports the quality was good and the interest in Hereford influence calves lived up to expectations. Like every other area, the prices have dropped by.25 cents on the six weight calves by the last of October. Good news for the grain producers as the price of barley has risen, but bad news for the cattleman.

A bright spot in the purebred Hereford industry in BC was the Copper Creek Ranch Sale held on Oct 7. This is an outfit that has done a lot of work trying to breed the kind of cattle that will fit into the commercial market of today. By doing so they are also building interest from the purebred breeders. The Copper Creek herd has been built through the use of performance information and EPD values and it looks like they are on the right track. The interest in their sale was good and the prices reflected that interest. The summary can be found in the sale reports.

There is a strong possibility that the Evergreen Sale will move from spring to a fall date. The Evergreen Sale is sponsored by the West Coast Hereford Club and is the longest running club consignment sale in Canada and possibly North America. It has taken a lot of diligent work and dedication by the West Coast members over the past 38 years to keep the club going. Time has passed and it likely is time to move onto another stage of growth. A lot of positive benefits for both buyer and seller will result from a change of sale time.

When this club sale was started, it was a way of promoting a sale for cattle being bred by the members. One of the founding members was H.H. "Spud" Huestis of Coppertone Farms at Abbotsford, who built the first open-pit copper mine in the world, Bethlehem Copper at Ashcroft, BC. He roamed a lot of mountains and worked hard to discover this mine. Spud was a real down to earth type of person who made a lot of friends wherever he went and he never put on airs. He was a consistent sponsor of all activities undertaken by the club. The Hereford industry was lucky to have those kinds of breeders to help get the Evergreen started and there are many more successful people today who want to see it continue.

The West Coast Hereford Club will be having their annual general meeting in December and that will be when the future of this longest running Club Sale in Canada will be decided.

Another club that has been active for many years is the Thompson Valley Hereford Breeders. They sponsor the Salmon Arm Hereford Challenge Show each year and that has become a top notch show. The Thompson Valley Club will be holding their annual general meeting in November and their hard working club secretary, Joan O'Brien, has sent out meeting notices

It is up to every Hereford member to support their respective club events. The success of the promotion from these efforts is wholly dependent upon the participation and enthusiasm of every club member.

ONTARIO HEREFORD HAPPENINGS

Since this will be the last report for the year, we want to take this opportunity to extend to the breeders in Ontario, and our fellow breeders across Canada a sincere and blessed Christmas season. Since most of us live in the fast lane at least some of the time, then it would be very beneficial for us to stop at this time of year and express to our loved ones and friends a sincere appreciation for them. We are a blessed nation and not many of us would change places with those elsewhere.

I especially want to say a heart felt thanks to all the Hereford Fraternity for your kindness during my recovery from triple by-pass surgery. We look forward to a new year with you and The Breed in the Lead.

Sincerely, Ron Wells

QUEBEC HEREFORD COMMUNIQUE

As we look back on 2006, it would certainly be described as upbeat and very encouraging for Herefords in Quebec. The bull sales last spring were stronger than ever as demand and interest continues to grow. The telephone continues to ring which bodes well for the upcoming season. The production sales held in the fall were well attended and the enthusiasm ran high. The summer shows generally saw higher entries and increased interest in the Hereford breed. Of course the highlight of the show season was Expo-Boeuf held in Victoriaville Quebec on Thanksgiving weekend. Over 500 head from ten different breeds were in attendance with about 110 Herefords shown. To cap it off, Herefords took home both divisions in the Inter-Breed Championship. GH Col Patton 20P, owned by John Mastine and Adams Hirsche, took top honours amongst the bulls and RHBF 402H Madonna 303M, owned by Rolf and Heidi Birchler, took the females. Congratulations to all and let's all do our best to keep the trend going.

The Eastern Townships Hereford Club

put on a successful junior clinic and show on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Brome Quebec Fairgrounds. Workshops and demonstrations covering topics such as grooming and preparation, showmanship, judging, the job of ring-man and etiquette in general were presented by Jennifer and Paul Mastine and John Nielsen. A junior show finished off the afternoon with thanks to Kevin Dempsey for stopping by to judge the kids. A 'senior class' provided some chuckles and laughs for all and was judged by the Quebec Junior President, Ray Smith, who showed no mercy at all! John Nielsen and his partner also provided an excellent presentation on hoof problems and care as well as a demonstration on hoof trimming. A barbecue lunch and dinner were served and the ever popular 'silent auction' provided entertainment throughout the day. On behalf of Dick Cadarette, president of the Eastern Townships Club, we would like to thank all the directors, the numerous sponsors and volunteers who helped make this first ever 'Eastern Townships Hereford Day' a success. Hopes are that an event such as this will rotate around the various fairgrounds in the area giving everyone a chance to come out for some ' Hereford ' fun.

BRITISH BREEDS CALF SALE

British Breeds SaleThe Canadian Hereford Association, the Alberta Hereford Association and The Canadian Hereford Digest are three of only some 60 sponsors helping to promote the annual British Breeds Calf Sale held in mid October every year at Balog Auction in Lethbridge, AB. This sale annually attracts some three and half thousand calves, the great majority of which are Hereford or Hereford crossbreds. The event has become so popular in fact, that last year, auction market owner, Bob Balog, initiated a British Breeds II Sale and in 2006 added a British Breeds "Extra" Sale in order to accommodate all those producers wanting to participate in this kind of featured event. Certainly, featured Hereford calf sales are held at several markets in many provinces throughout the fall and they all do an excellent job of helping to promote the influence of Hereford bloodlines in today's commercial cattle. However, the event at Balog's was the first and is still the largest drawing a capacity crowd of buyers, sellers and sponsors every year.

As has been the practice at this event, a beef seminar and reception was hosted the evening prior to the sale, on Monday, Oct. 16. This year's featured speaker was Gordon Butler, Chairman of the Alberta Property Rights Committee. This organization continues to lobby the provincial and federal governments for the rights of landowners to control the use and future of their own property.

The Alberta Hereford Association again sponsored an outstanding steak luncheon of the several hundred people in attendance and served aged tenderloin provided by Hirsche Fraser Meats of High River.

On sale morning, a panel of judges annually selects winners in a pen of ten head competition for both steers and heifers as well as championship liner load lots. This year's panel of judges was comprised of Byron Templeton, Earl Dunn, Harold Oddan, Jack Leeuwenburgh, and Gordon Butler. A summary of the winners is as follows:

OBITUARIES

Louise Clifton
Louise Leora Clifton (Havens) was born in 1909 in Nebraska and at the age of two her family moved to Ponoka, AB. In 1918, at the age of nine, her family moved to the Okanagan Lake at Sicamous, BC and stayed in the new Incola Hotel. They then moved to their new ranch in the Yellow Lake area near Kaledan, BC, where she learned to ride, rope and handle cattle and horses with her brothers. She spent many happy days riding on the White Lake Range, which is a large part of the present day Clifton Ranch.

In 1926, at age 17, Louise married the local station agent Ivan Clifton and moved to the home where she spent the balance of her life and raised four children, Wilson, Ivadelle, Wendell and Shirley.

Louise was well known for her love of Thoroughbred Horses and Hereford cattle. Her Hereford bulls sold well at the sales and her horses won many races at Hastings Park. Her love of Herefords rubbed off on the family and her son Wilson has a herd of Horned Herefords today.

Being a crack shot with a rifle she won many turkey shoots and at the Hereford Field days she won many nail driving contests. She was also the neighbourhood barber for the bachelors and young people in her district. Her father was a butcher and taught her many butchering skills.

She drove her car until she was over 90 years of age and her mind was still very sharp up until the day she died. Her many grandchildren could sit for hours and listen to the stories of her youth. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

JoAnne Mary Wessbecher
Born March 27, 1946 at Peterborough, Ontario, (nee Neck), JoAnne Wessbecher passed away peacefully on Monday September 18, 2006. Daughter of Jean (Jim Poynton), mother of John Perry (Teurmi) and grandmother to Shigen of Japan. Sister of Barbara and Jimmy, step-mother to Michael Wessbecher (Carol) and Lori Ann Wessbecher and Oma to Rachel.

JoAnne's passion for Herefords began in 1986 with a 500 acre farm on the Fraser River near Abbotsford, B.C. Her farm name was Fraserview and she ran 135 head of both commercial and purebred animals. While out west, JoAnne showed in all of the major shows in British Columbia, as well as Agribition and Farmfair.

In 1993 JoAnne moved back to Ontario and it wasn't long before she was bitten by the Hereford bug again. She and her husband Ed bought a farm in Cobourg in 1997, named it Hillside Herefords and immediately stocked it with cows from Whisper Mountain Herefords (Barbara & Gary Russell), Lanford Farm (Vicki & Less Lancaster) and the herd of Jan Davies. JoAnne and Ed always enjoyed showing at the local fairs and their highlight came in 2000 when they had the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. JoAnne was always willing and enthusiastic to share her knowledge and expertise about the Hereford breed.

JoAnne served for eight years on the East Central Hereford Zone board and two years on the Ontario board. She will be greatly missed by the Hereford fraternity and her enthusiasm and memory will live on in those she shared with.
