From Field to Desk
With many of the larger private breeder bull sales still to come in February, we have already sold 382 bulls for an average price of $3,591. More bulls are selling for more money and it's happening in a year when most breeders are offering fewer numbers - a result of lower demand due to BSE in 2003 and 2004.
For the past 10 weeks, every market in the country reports record numbers of slaughter bulls coming through their yards and, while the price of bred cows fluctuates, almost all are going back to someone's breeding pasture. I even had one breeder ask me the other day if we weren't filling up buyers before the spring consignment sales come along. On the contrary, I think we've only begun to see the kind of growth in demand that we will experience over the next few years. At the same time, it has never been so important to market only our best. This business has boiled down to three breeds - Herefords, Angus and Simmental, plus a host of not so predictable cross-breds. Hereford breeders have the best opportunity they've had for 20 years to increase their market share. Intense competition from other breeds over the past two decades forced severe culling in every Hereford herd in the country. This practice is what has now given our breed an easily recognizable edge over our competitors who have been far too lax with the knife during the same period. A higher percentage of Hereford cattle are sound, docile, efficient on feed and can compete favourably for all the traits demanded by the packinghouses.
We're even selling bulls into herds with traditionally straight black cows and the yellow/white-face cattle are getting redder every year. Our breed probably enjoys the best reputation for dependability that it has ever had and it has not been easily earned. The trust our customers have placed with us must be guarded ferociously but it will be easily maintained so long as we continue to market only the top half of the crop.
As this New Year begins, we have more to look forward to than for the past few years. I am no longer "cautiously" optimistic but genuinely enthused by what I see happening for this breed in the near future. I look forward to seeing many of you over the next few months and remember - Hereford cattle aren't just good for the industry - they're worth money!

Herefords score "hat trick" at RBC Supreme Challenge
A Hereford bull won the RBC Royal Bank Beef Supreme Challenge at the 2005 Canadian Western Agribition for the third year in a row.
The Horned Hereford bull, BCD 140L DOM LAD 326N, is owned by Adams Hirsche Herefords, High River, AB; Dallas Farms, Bowden, AB and Peter Herefords, Langley, BC. The RBC Supreme Champion bull qualified for the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge as Supreme Champion over all breeds at the 2005 Calgary Stampede.
326N was bred by Bar Pipe Farms, Okotoks; was sold in-dam to Dallas Farms where he was raised and then purchased at the 2005 Calgary Bull Sale by Adams Hirsche Herefords. He is sired by BP Robin Hood 140L and out of BP 146D Lady 30L.
The RBC Beef Supreme Challenge brought together all of the Canadian Western Agribition Grand Champions in an interbreed competition against Grand and Supreme Champions from Canada 's major livestock shows to be judged by a select panel of five cattle producers.
The judges were Wayne Burgess, Del Bonita, AB; Barry Young, Carievale, SK ; Kerrie Sparrow, Vanscoy, SK ; Miles Glasman, Russell, MB ; and Bill Biglieni, Douglas, MB.
Prior to selecting the RBC Beef Supreme Champions, the judges named the top 10 bulls and the top 10 females. Canadian National Hereford Show
The 2005 National Hereford Show, held in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of Canadian Western Agribition, took place on Friday, Nov. 25. As agreed on by all who were in attendance, it was the greatest Hereford show at Agribition for many years attracting a tremendous crowd of Hereford enthusiasts from throughout Canada and the United States, as well as 68 overseas international visitors. Nearly 350 head of Polled and Horned Hereford cattle were led before Judge Kyle Colyer of Colyer Hereford Ranch at Bruneau, Idaho. The entries were divided into 78 individual and divisional championship classes.
This year's show was hosted by the Saskatchewan Hereford Association and their president, Gordon Gustafson also served as National Show Chairman. Special recognition also needs to go to the SHA Manager, Marilyn Charlton; Barn Boss, Gordon Craig; Commercial Show Chairperson, Marilyn Ramsay; Red Coat Classic Chairman, Neil Wilson; and Canadian Junior Showmanship Chairperson, Karen Wagner, also president of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. The efforts of these people and their committees, together with the sponsors and, most importantly, the enthusiastic exhibitors, created a display of Canadian Hereford cattle that were the envy of all other breeds at this year's Agribition.
One important responsibility taken on each year by this committee is the recognition of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association Commercial Cattleman of the Year. In 2005 that honour was awarded to the Diamond J Cattle Co. and Adamson Bros., Makwa, SK. The SHA extends their congratulations to the Adamson families for their efforts in the promotion of Hereford cattle in Saskatchewan.

Red Coat Classic
A total of five classes made up the competition for the 11th annual Red Coat Classic held in conjunction with Canadian Western Agribition and the National Hereford Show on Saturday, Nov. 26. The judges for this year event were Chris Lees of C & T Herefords, Arcola; Jim Wildeman of Wild Bear Herefords, Okotoks, AB and Jock Bevin of Australia. As in the past, judges selected one bull from each class to advance to the final section from which they chose their grand champion. This year's winning bull was an entry of 3-D-L Polled Herefords, Abbotsford, BC, owned by Daryl Kirton and family. He was 3-D-L Lady's Riffleman 2R, a Jan. 4, 2005 son of NS Keno 005 and out of a homebred cow named 3-D-L Amber's Lady ET 14L by Bar-E-L 740C Carson 24F. He had EPDs of BW 4.4, WW 43.3, YW 80.2, Milk 18.8 and TM of 40.4. He came to the show weighing 1,078 pounds. The winner of the champion bull at the Red Coat Classic received prize money of $3,000. The show is financed by the sale of membership tickets at $100 each. Anyone wishing to, could purchase a ticket and at the completion of the show, one winner was drawn who then had the opportunity to select a bull of his choice. This year's winner was H. Mortinson of Strasbourg, SK. He selected a half semen interest and full possession in Square-D Razor 201R from Square D Polled Herefords, Langbank. 201R is sired by LJR 186A Ben 175K and out of a daughter of Klondike 500Z Federation 7C. The Dukes took home $10,000 for the second year in a row.

83rd ROYAL HEREFORD SHOW
Without a doubt, this being the 83rd Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, we have seen many changes take place through the years. The words 'Agriculture' and ' Hereford ' are synonymous with this great event. The Hereford breed continues to have a significant impact being the largest beef breed represented in years past with 2005 being no exception as 157 head were paraded before the judges, David Johner and his son Justin, Maidstone, SK. The Ontario Association wishes to thank them for their part in helping to make this a great event that draws closure on another tremendous year for Herefords in eastern Canada. Also, a word of thanks to Sheila James, show chairperson, and her capable committee and volunteers, as well as Dave McEachren, barn boss, in the handling of show procedures. Once again, you as an exhibitor, whether you had one or 20 head, are to be congratulated for your commitment to the breed at an event such as this.
Juniors, we are proud of you as you participated in the Junior Showmanship and the National Beef Heifer Show. It was special to have one of our own, Justin Lasby, win the Grand Champion Showmanship award.

Adams-Hirsche Annual Sale
"RAMBO" CANADA 'S TOP SELLING CALF IN 2005
November 15, 2005 High River, AB
Total Average
62 1/4 bulls $327,900 $5,267
23 1/2 females $54,700 $2,328
85 3/4 lots $382,600 $4,462
43 3/4 Angus bulls averaged $3,703
7 Angus females averaged $2,050
73 bred commercial heifers averaged $1,111
It was the bull calf, Rambo, who graced the cover of the sale catalogue and drew a great deal of attention for several months prior to the sale who went on to establish what will certainly be recorded as the high value for any Canadian Hereford animal in 2005. Several partnerships of American and Canadian breeders were highly dedicated in their intentions to own the full one-half interest offered in this outstanding prospect but there could only be one winner. When the hammer fell, the new owners included Four L Herefords, Atwood, Tennessee ; Dean Thompson, Nashville, Tennessee ; Perks Ranch, Rockwood, Illinois ; Michael Perez, Nara Visa, New Mexico and Spencer Herefords, Brewster, Nebraska. Their bid of $135,000 gives them the right to one-half interest and one-half possession. GH Rambo 279R is a son of GH Neon 17N, who was previously the top selling bull at the 2005 Calgary Bull Sale when he brought $51,000 selling to Upstream Ranch. Rambo's mother is HR Gold Domino 251E, an older cow with an exceptional track record. EPDs for Rambo were BW 4.1, WW 45, YW 82, Milk 14 and TM 36.

Alberta Showcase Farmfair International
Each year Farmfair International, held in Edmonton, AB, is the site of the Alberta Hereford Showcase. At this year's event, the return to a strong demand for beef cattle certainly had its influence felt as entries for the Horned and Polled Hereford shows increased by some 50 per cent over 2004. More than 120 single entries, evenly split between both shows, made for excellent competition. The stall displays in the Hereford barn were the best every presented to the general public and many exhibitors commented about the excellent traffic they received from cattlemen attending other events at Farmfair. The shows were judged by the husand and wife team of Stuart and Sherri Zoeteman of Bar RZ Polled Herefords, Fort Macleod, AB. The cattle shown were of exceptional quality and most exhibitors were already making plans for their participation in the Canadian National Hereford Show, which will be hosted in Edmonton in the fall of 2006.

The B.C. Hereford Bull-etin
With the Christmas season behind us, we can now concentrate on the spring bull sales and calving. I hope all your calves are potential champions.
We in British Columbia are proud to have one of our breeders own a part of the Supreme Champion Bull at Agribition. Congratulations to Peter Herefords of Langley for the foresight in purchasing an interest in BCD 40L Dom Lad 326N. We will likely hear more about this bull. Also congratulations to Daryl and Linda Kirton who won the Red Coat Classic and $3,000 prize money.
The Thompson Valley Hereford Breeders held their annual meeting and potluck dinner recently and returned Rick Hyam from Salmon Arm to the president's position. Vice president is Maureen Ziemer of Lumby. Joan O'Brien continues as the ever-reliable secretary/treasurer. Joan has held this position for some time now and can always be counted on to carry out any task she undertakes. Maureen continues to be the representative from the club to the BCHA Board of Directors.
Keith Bostock and Neil Turner, both from Salmon Arm, and Geoff O'Brien and Simon Shaw of Sorrento were returned as directors. Al Jones of Falkland was added to the board. This club hosts the annual Hereford Challenge at the Salmon Arm Fair that attracts over 60 head showing each year.
At the West Coast meeting held recently, Murray Gore of Surrey was elected president, Daryl Kirton from Abbotsford sits as the vice president and Harvey Krause of Aldergrove is the secretary/treasurer. Vic Redekop of Aldergrove, Greg Peter of Langley, Ross Springford from Nanoose Bay, Henry Braun of Abbotsford, Everett Godfrey of Mission and Alf Weibe from Abbotsford round out the directorship of the club.
The West Coast Club has decided to go ahead with another Evergreen Sale on May 6, 2006. This will be the 38th Annual Evergreen Sale that will be hosted by the West Coast Hereford Club. This sale has the distinction of being the longest running club consignment sale in Canada and possibly North America. When it was started 38 years ago, the membership was small and they gradually built it into one of the great club consignment sales in Canada. Although it has become smaller over the past few years, the same enthusiasm still exists that was there when the few members went from door to door to encourage people to come out and attend the sale. That same door knocking has to happen again if all our sales are to regain the stature held before. You cannot enter a sale and expect someone else to sell your cattle for you. The same holds true of the bull sales this spring.

FIRST HEREFORD and HEREFORD CROSS CALF SALE
BRUSSELS STOCK YARDS - NOV. 14, 2005
There was a very good number of Hereford and Hereford cross calves, along with some Angus, consigned to the sale totaling 586 head. The good Hereford calves topped at $1.32 per pound. Many of these calves were in the 400 to 500 pound average with a price spread accordingly. This is only the beginning of such an endeavor as we promote the Hereford breed to our feedlot buyers. In 2006, we plan on holding several more such sales in other parts of Ontario.
Thank You To National Market Development Program Manager Guy Smith
The O.H.A. Board and membership would like to express sincere appreciation to Guy Smith for his very capable and influential manner in which he presented the Hereford breed here in Ontario. This has been an incentive for us to carry on in the promotion of our breed to the commercial industry. Thanks Guy, and our best wishes to you and your family.
